Music of Shir Ami
Since the very beginning, Shir Ami has placed a high level of importance on the music of our congregation. After all, the word “song” is right in our name. Here Shabbat services will feature a variety of different styles – from choirs to klezmer to groups made up of our littlest kids. Over the years we have brought in guest musicians for special events, created our own unique musical Purim shows, highlighted cantorial soloists, featured a renowned cellist at Kol Nidre, encouraged confirmation students to make musical contributions at Shavuot servcies, and much more. From instruments to voice, Shir Ami continues to be a place where music shines.
If you would like to participate in one of our musical groups, please contact Cantor Elson.
Shir Ami Adult Choir
The Shir Ami Adult Choir begins preparation for the High Holy Days early in September. After Simchat Torah and for the rest of the year the choir meets regularly on Wednesday nights beginning at 7:30 PM and sings at Friday evening services approximately once a month. The music is varied and represents both traditional and modern Jewish choral styles. Over the years our choir has participated in a number of community events and concerts. While all Shir Ami members are welcome in the choir, the ability to learn a melody quickly and to carry a tune is necessary. If you would be interested to join our choir, email or call Cantor Elson.
Shir Ami Youth Choir – Makheilah
The Makheilah is our youth choir which is open to all of our Religious School students. Rehearsals are held on Sunday mornings. The Makheilah sings at services occasionally, and at other special events when possible.
Parents, please encourage participation by your children in the Makheilah. It is a fun and easy activity, they will learn lots of songs, and it’s also a great way for them to learn the words to many of the prayers through music. Please contact Cantor Elson for more information.
Shir Klez
Shir Klez is our Shir Ami band made up of very talented instrumentalists from our congregation. Woodwind, brass or violin players are very welcome to audition for the band. The group is currently made up of adults, but serious, talented and reliable teenage musicians may join as well. SHIR KLEZ! plays arrangements of our prayer melodies and has a growing repertoire of Klezmer tunes. The band provides all the music for our Kabbalat Shabbat services, which begin at 6:15 PM on the third Friday of each month. The band also plays for our regular Shabbat evening services at 7:30 PM once or twice each year, and has played at community events, special music programs and simchot. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings once a month, and for an hour before the Kabbalat Shabbat service. If being part of our band interests you, email or call Cantor Elson.
